Drawing I--Day 2
Seeing the basic shapes--mapping strategy
-Practice drawing the perfect circle, square, triangle
-Left brain, right brain drawing--use the left brain to simplify and see the basic shapes. Use right brain to add contour and detail.
-Talk about test on Tuesday (three days to practice)
-Demo of mapping out basic shapes of hand, then the modified contour over--draw light but don't erase yet.
-Draw hand holding an object--blind contour (not looking at paper)
-Volunteer to map out basic shapes of face--demo the correct placement of the features of the face, then modified contour over the map
-Practice drawing your table mate using mapping strategy
Drawing I--Day 3
Symbols vs. drawing what you see
2nd grader 4th grader 6th grader
Hand drawing hand out--draw basic shapes over the drawing then draw freehand in sketchbook
Smartboard--volunteers to find basic shapes in different drawings
Vocabulary
Negative Shapes--the space in between your subject-draw these shapes to improve accuracy of angles and correct proportion.
Sensitive Line--variation of dark and light lines
Blind Contour overlapping drawing using sensitive line--
Modified contour of hands using sensitive line

Day 4
Restating--let's not be perfect until we are perfect
Don't be a hater, be a restater
Practice hand holding an object--
Sensitive line
More practice drawing animals on smart board
Day 5
We are all eggheads!
Preparing for 3/4 view portraits
Drawing II
Day 5
Pepper Rubric--select the row that has to do with the quality of drawing and where your ability is at this point, everything else is effort, following directions, things that all can learn.
Why do a 3/4 portrait? Daily writing
More interesting visually, captures a moment, more personality, more interesting shapes and shadows
Take 3/4 portraits of classmates different angles--we will add these to our database of images to choose from
Day 6-9 Complete pepper
Rubric. Circle the criteria you have met. What haven't you done yet? (walk around and look at others artwork) Why do this? Learn from other's successes challenges
Vocab
Local color
Reflected Color
Since skin tones are built up by layering pastels, it can be useful to start with a sympathetic color as a foundation or base layer. You'll find the subsequent skin tones are deeper and more natural in appearance.
Where skin is tight across bone, such as knees, elbows, and forehead, use a base color of cold yellow. Where skin is in shadow, such as under the jaw, use a base of earth green. Where skin is in recessed shadow, such as around the eyes, use a warm blue, such as ultramarine blue. Where the skin is over flesh, use a warm carmine or cadmium red.

Saturation vs. Desaturation

Light is warm
Use straight lines to see how the shape of the eye changes as it turns
print out eyes from different angles trace over shapes with straight lines
Look at negative shapes
print out picture for stippling
Memorize the basics and then draw over with the specifics.
3/4 Portrait Strategies
As always look for the basic shapes. Start with big shapes and work until the face is a series of memorizable shapes. Simplify. Block shapes out lightly
Restating: Instead of erasing incorrect lines, restate the line again comparing it's relationship to the first line--make adjustments of size and angle
Your page should be filled with restatements working from light to darker lines until proportions and angles are accurate.
Let's practice:

Anyone can learn to draw. Do you believe it?
Weekly growth chart----setting and reaching small goals
Focus on what we can do which leads to goal setting (what I cannot do yet)
Sharpen your pencil
Trace basic shapes
Draw a sensitive line
Hold a drawing tool in more than one way
Hatch and Cross Hatch
Map out a drawing using basic shapes

Create an Original Drawing
Blind Contour Drawing Hand holding an object
Imagine that your pencil is being pulled along your paper by a car traveling along the edge of your subject. The edge is a road and the car is moving slowly--your eye sees all the tilts and curves, dips and jags and transfers them onto your page. The goal in drawing accurately is to connect your hand and pencil with what your eye is seeing. This hand/eye coordination in the key to drawing what is really there and not drawing symbols.
Developing good hand-eye coordination is key when learning to draw. With regular practice, blind contour drawing exercises will help train your hand to follow your eye's movements.
In blind contour, will your drawing be exaggerated? Will lines overlap.
Yes, and that is desired effect

Day 9 Hands
Sensitive Line
Students come up one by one and balance a composition using sensitive line--a gradation from dark to light that creates a sense of form in line only.
Day 10 Finish Hands
Early finishers work on texture squares
Day 11 Value study
gradation lineup students come up and stand in value order (clothing) lightest to darkest
Look for an area of your picture that has the greatest range of values
in a magazine image
Grid a 5X5 square with 1/2 inch segments
Choose the primary value in a single square and match with value shading
Use cross-hatching to layer pencil to build up values, especially mid range greys
rather than pressing harder on lead. For darks you can press harder but remember that you cannot go back(erase) the dark values. Building up slowly is a better process
Day 12 Texture Squares
Six 2.5 inch texture squares in sketchbook
Find 6 different textures in the room including floor, ceiling, clothing, hair, table, still life objects

Light Logic Quiz
Cover page with light coat of charcoal
Draw 3-D shapes with white charcoal life size or larger
Represent highlights, light, shadow, core shadow, reflected light, Cast shadow
Work on zoom in squares
Day 16 Using Crayons (as suggested by Eric Anderson)
Create shape sculptures

Day 17 Praise and Support
Dynamic range of values Good darks and lights
You represented the sensitive line and unique shapes In the leaf veins Nice veins in the leaf square
Your shapes are in proportion to You matched the circles well
the original
You used a paper under your hand to prevent smudging. Looks crisp and clean! You are so neat!!!!
The Packers suffered a heartbreaking loss due to some terrible calls by the referees The refs really sucked big time.
Use vocabulary Be specific Avoid words like cool, good,
Positive negative shapes nice, awesome, great
Value range
Variety or gradation in line (sensitive)
Composition choices
Evenness of shading

Day 18
Work Skills
Today I will be assessing you on how well you stay on task. A score of 10 means you worked the entire period with little socializing (talking about your drawing is acceptable!) A score of 2 means you were working only 20% of the time with excessive socializing, scrolling through music, walking around, etc
I will not be reminding you to get back to work today This day is for those of you who are behind on your drawing because of your lack of work ethic in this class. You need to start self-regulating. Imagine that this is a job and if you don't do it, you could be fired. Not drawing in drawing class is a form of noncompliance and can/will result in detention. And this lack of effort is showing in your work. Noone in this class should be getting lower than a B.

Day 19 Drawing Crumpled Paper--using colored pencil
Set up lights and move table together
Artfully crumple up paper--you want to have a wide variety of planes (surfaces) big, medium, small to draw.
Avoid over-crumpling which results in many small wrinkles--hard and boring to draw.
Show me the six types of light.
Practice overlapping white and one color

Day 20 Setting up a still life
Three objects--
No eraser today You must use paper under your hand
Benchmark system--you advance to the next level after reaching proficiency
1. Three different still life thumbnails
2. Map out composition including cast shadow contour----light as possible You may include light logic areas such as highlight and core shaadow
3. Establish light and medium tones around highlights
4. Establish tones of reflective light core shadows and cast shadows
5. Unify composition with additional layers of graphite to achieve smooth shading and refine textures
6, Check to make sure there are no lines, only values on each side of the contour, There will be exceptions and when that occurs make sure your lines are
sensitive lines with variation on value gradation and thickness.
